Coptic Cairo: The Hanging Church or El Muallaqa

The Hanging Church is one of the oldest churches in Egypt, dating back to the 3rd century.

It's called the hanging church because it's built over an old Roman fortress, known as the Babylon Fortress. It's suspended about 6 meters above the fortress. You can peer down below and see the ruins.

All over Coptic Cairo, you can find images of the Holy Family and their flight into Egypt. This one was outside the church.
